Getting started

What does EpiKeeper do?

It keeps track of every epinephrine auto-injector your family owns: who it belongs to, where it is kept, its lot number and its expiration date. It also reminds you before each one expires.

Is it really free?

Yes. EpiKeeper is free, with no ads, subscriptions or in-app purchases.

Which products does it work with?

Any epinephrine auto-injector or nasal spray: EpiPen®, EpiPen Jr®, Auvi-Q®, Teva and Amneal generics, Adrenaclick®, Symjepi® and neffy®. If yours isn’t in the list, type in the brand and dose yourself.

Which iPhones are supported?

Any iPhone running iOS 17 or later.

How do I add a 2-pack?

When you add a pen, set Number of pens to 2. Both pens get the same lot and expiration but are tracked separately, so you can later move one to school and keep the other at home.

Scanning labels

How do I scan a label?

Tap +, then Scan Label with Camera. Photograph the part of the pen or box that shows LOT and EXP. For best results:

  • Get close, so the text fills most of the frame
  • Use good light and tilt the pen to avoid glare
  • Keep the text flat and in focus. The curved side of the pen is the hardest part; the box is often easier.

EpiKeeper also reads the square barcode on the carton, which includes the exact lot and expiration.

It read the lot but not the expiration date. Why?

Many auto-injectors print the month as a two-letter code, such as EXP 2027-DE for December 2027. EpiKeeper understands these codes:

  • JAJan
  • FEFeb
  • MRMar
  • MAMar
  • APApr
  • MYMay
  • JNJun
  • JLJul
  • AUAug
  • SESep
  • OCOct
  • NONov
  • DEDec

It also reads 2027-12, 12/2027, DEC 2027 and 12/27. If a date still isn’t found, try a closer photo, scan the box instead, or set the date by hand. Then tell us about the label so we can add support for it.

Why is the date set to the last day of the month?

When a label shows only a month and year, the product is good through the last day of that month. A pen marked 2027-DE expires on December 31, 2027.

Should I trust the scan?

Always check the result against the label before you save. Camera text recognition is good but not perfect; for example, it can mix up 0 and O. EpiKeeper shows exactly what it read so you can compare.

Are my label photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Text recognition runs on your iPhone using Apple’s built-in Vision technology. If you keep a label photo, it’s stored with that pen on your device, and you can remove it at any time.

Reminders

When will I get reminders?

Once at the start of your warning window (30 days before expiry by default; choose 14–90 days in Settings), and again on the day the pen expires, at the time you pick.

I’m not getting any reminders.

Check that Settings → Expiration Reminders is on in EpiKeeper, and that notifications are allowed for EpiKeeper in the iPhone Settings app under Notifications. Reminders only go out for active pens that haven’t passed their reminder date yet.

What does “Expiring Soon” mean?

The pen is inside your warning window and it’s time to order a refill. Red means it has already expired and should be replaced.

Your data

Can my partner see the same pens on their phone?

Not yet. Each iPhone keeps its own list. For now, use Settings → Share Pen Summary to send the list by Messages or email. Syncing between family members is planned.

What happens to a pen after it’s used or replaced?

It moves to Settings → Retired Pens, along with the reason and date, and stops sending reminders. You can restore it or delete it there.

How do I add a location like a sitter’s house?

In the pen editor, tap New Location, or go to Settings → Locations to add, rename, reorder or change the icon of any location. Renaming a location updates every pen stored there.

How do I delete my data?

Delete pens or people inside the app, or delete the app to erase everything. EpiKeeper has no copy of your data, because it never leaves your phone.

Is EpiKeeper medical advice?

No. EpiKeeper is an organizer. Follow your doctor’s instructions and the product label, and in an emergency use the auto-injector and call 911 or your local emergency number.
